of distinguished service to the Republic of China on Taiwan and for his friendship with
the people of the United States.

Mr. SESSIONS (for himself, Mr. BURTON of Indiana, Mr.
ROHRABACHER, Mr. SAM JOHNSON of Texas, Mr. MANZULLO, Mr. SALMON, Mr. RADANOVICH, Mr.
EHRLICH, Mr. ARMEY, and Mr. DELAY) submitted the following concurrent resolution; which
was referred to the Committee on International Relations
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Commending Ambassador Stephen S.F. Chen for his many years
of distinguished service to the Republic of China on Taiwan and for his friendship with
the people of the United States.
Whereas Ambassador Stephen S.F. Chen of Taiwan has been a
member of the diplomatic service of the Republic of China on Taiwan over a period of 47
years;
Whereas Ambassador Chen has represented Taiwan in such
countries as the Philippines, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and the United States;
Whereas Ambassador Chen has held a number of important
positions in Taiwan , including the positions of Vice Foreign Minister and Deputy
Secretary-General to President Lee Teng-hui;
Whereas Ambassador Chen's many years of service in the
United States include appointments as Taiwan's Consul-General in Atlanta (1973 to 1979)
and as Director of the Coordination Council for North American Affairs in Chicago (1980 to
1982) and Los Angeles (1988 to 1989);
Whereas Ambassador Chen has served with distinction as the
senior diplomat of Taiwan in the United States since 1997, when he became the
Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the District
of Columbia; and
Whereas Ambassador Chen has been a staunch friend of the
people of the United States and a determined advocate of closer ties between Taiwan and
the United States, and has earned the respect and genuine affection of many Members of
Congress: Now, therefore, be it
